Junior doctors in England have launched a planned strike lasting from July 25 to July 30, after negotiations with the government failed to yield a satisfactory deal. The British Medical Association (BMA) has demanded a 29% pay increase to restore doctors’ salaries to 2008 real-term levels—while the government offered just 5.4%.

BMA co-chairs Melissa Ryan and Ross Nieuwoudt stated that talks with Health Secretary Wes Streeting were “constructive” but lacked substantive proposals on pay and working conditions. As of now, the union’s door remains open for further negotiation.

With the strike impacting hospitals across England, patients and healthcare services face escalating delays.
